Jacob Stein a third generation Mudgee NSW winemaker is now at the helm at Robert Stein wines. His approach starts in the vineyard and attributes his wines success directly to his families terroir. Jacob Stein and his team at Robert Stein have been awarded with red 5 Stars for the 5th year running. It is an amazing achievement by Jacob and his team, and it truly places them in the top producers in NSW and Australia.
Vinden Estate in the Hunter Valley NSW, is now under the guidance of second-generation winemaker Angus Vinden, who took over the business from parents Sandra and Guy in 2015. He has maintained the original traditional Hunter wines as well as introducing newer styles. All wines are made from the ground up, as Angus is firstly a wine grower and believes good wine starts from the soil.
Gilbert Family Wines
Producing elegant wines from the lofty heights of Mount Canobolis in Orange NSW and Mudgee NSW, Simon Gilbert and his son Will have been producing elegant wines out of Orange for many years and have just started to receive critical acclaim. Both Simon and Will are masters of creating elegant whites and refined reds, they have recently added an interesting line up of experimental wine to their range which sell out every year.
James started his wine making journey in 1992 in Bordeaux France where he gained skills in crafting world class wines, he then did wine making stint in Canada where he helped craft some of the finest Ice Wines in the world. He crafts interesting and stimulating wines from Mudgee, Orange and Hilltops regoin in NSW.
Mark Gilbert is the great-great-great-grandson of Joseph Gilbert, who established the Pewsey Vale vineyard (and winery) in 1847. Mark and Ali Gilbert have really began to push there wines to new heights recently, with a focus on vineyard expression and interesting wine making. Mark and Ali make all Estate grown wines with vineyards in; Adelaide Hills, MacLaren Vale and Langhore Creek.
Orange Mountain Wines
I can think of no other winemaker or grower that makes the most authentic terroir based wines in Orange NSW other than Terry Dolle. Terry is unassuming and humble, he creates arguably the best Viognier in the country and his low intervention Pinot Noirs are delicate, elegant and expressive. Terry Dolle is one of Australia great growers.
Lenton Brae was established in 1982 in the Margaret River WA sub-region of Wilybrup by Bruce and Jeanette Tomlinson, it remains a family owned and operated vineyard and winery. Edward Tomlinson is now the current caretaker and winemaker and makes outstanding Chardonnays and Cabernet's from one the best terroirs in the Margaret River. Edward is a true master of expressive chardonnay with Jancis Robinson recently blown away by the quality of his Chardonnay.
Turon and his wife Alex established Turon Wines in 2013. Since that time they have both worked hard to showcase the unquie region of the Adelaide Hills and champion their sub-region of Lenswood. Turon makes wines that speak of the Hills, wines that a rooted in it's terroir. Turon's wines are expressive, modern examples of South Australian wines where the fruit is let to shine.
Turon has been receiving very positive press about his wines. His 2018 Pinot Noir was given great praise by James Haliday.
First Ridge Wines
Viticulturist and wine maker team Colin Milott and James Manners have teamed up to create some interesting and Estate grown wines from Italian grapes straight out of the heart of Mudgee NSW. Colin believes that Mudgee is a perfect region for Italian varietals and the proof is in the wines. The Estate grown wines are fresh, stimulating, versatile and expressive, showing that Mudgee has a bright future in alternative varieties.
Tom Ward is an Orange NSW wine champion, a passionate grower, viticulturist, and winemaker. Tom has spent a long time in the Orange region, learning about its complex terroir, and honing his skills as a wine grower and maker. Tom aims to make high quality wines and is completely uncompromising in his approach to achieve terroir driven, express, cool climate wines that do justice to the Orange region. Some of Tom's most exciting wine are his "Hashtag" series where he is push conventional wine practices to achieve vineyard expressive wines with minimal intervention, his "Amber" wine is an outstanding example of a "skin contact" white.
